The Enchanting Sunset Stroll: A Perfect Beachside Experience

There’s something truly magical about watching the sun dip below the horizon, casting a warm and golden glow across the sky and the ocean. One of the most breathtaking ways to witness this natural spectacle is by taking a sunset walk on the beach. As the gentle waves lap at the shore and the colors of the sky transform, a sense of tranquility and wonder takes over. Recently I had the privilege of experiencing this when I took a trip to Grace Kenemer Barck North Beach Community Park (Sapphire Beach) in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. In this post, I’ll share my take on of one of my favorite sunset walks on the beach so you too can create memories that will stay with you long after the sun has set.

Choosing the Right Spot:
The first step to an unforgettable sunset walk is selecting the perfect spot along the beach. We chose Sapphire Beach as later in the evening, as the sun goes down, you don’t have to worry about paying for parking or even trying to fight to find parking as most of the beach goers have cleared out for the day. There are other areas you can choose from along the east coast, but this part in my opinion is the most serene. Although small, there is plenty of space for you or a small group of friends to enjoy this peaceful piece of Earth. This is especially a great spot in the winter months as you can have beach bonfires at this location.

Timing is Everything:
Timing is crucial for a memorable sunset walk. Research what time sunset will be for the day and arrive about 30 to 45 minutes before then. This gives you ample time to settle in, find a good spot, and immerse yourself in the changing atmosphere as the sun starts its descent.

What to Bring:
1. Comfortable Attire: I recommend wearing soft long pants and bringing a light sweater. Even though it’s the summer, there is a nice breeze as the sun goes down so something to keep off the chill will keep you comfortable through out the evening. I also reccomend comfortable shoes if you’re going to attempt to go for distance. If you’re going for a leisure stroll, sandals work just as good. (I always opt for going barefoot!)

2. Picnic Blanket or Beach Chair:  Make sure you bring a nice beach chair or blanket so after you finish exploring, you have a nice spot to sit and rest. My favorite beach accessory is my beach chair my husband gifted me for one of our anniversaries as it fully reclines. Having a cozy spot to sit enhances the experience, especially if you plan to linger and enjoy the view after the sun has set.

4. Snacks and Drinks: Pack some light snacks and beverages to savor during your time on the beach. A glass of wine or a thermos of hot cocoa can add to the ambience. Our favorite spot to stop is the Racetrac off of 44 when you’re headed east off of i4. Something about Icees and hotdogs always completes the trip.

5. Bug Spray and Sunscreen: Bug spray is a must as there are sand fleas and they do bite. Sunscreen just in case if you decide to go earlier in the day when the sun is still bright in the sky.

The Walk:
The walk itself begins from the steps leading from the the parking lot and goes up to The Breaker’s Restaurant. One way is about one mile. You’re always welcome to go further, but remember how far you travel is how far you have to come back. The restaurant has always been our marker. As you stroll along the coast, feel the coolness of the wet sand beneath your feet and listen to the soothing rhythm of the waves. Allow your senses to fully embrace the moment—the salty breeze, the gentle touch of the ocean, and the gradual change in the colors of the sky.

The Sunset:
As the sun sets, you’ll want to locate that comfortable spot to settle down as the sun approaches the horizon. Watch as the sky transforms from shades of blue to brilliant hues of orange, pink, and gold. The sun’s reflection on the water creates a mesmerizing dance of light. As the sun lowers, take a moment to reflect on the beauty of nature and the world around you.

After the Sunset:
Even after the sun has disappeared from view, the beauty of the moment lingers. The sky continues to shift colors as twilight sets in. This is the perfect time to enjoy your snacks and drinks, chat with friends or loved ones, or simply sit in quiet contemplation. We enjoy doing all the above!

Conclusion:
A sunset walk on the beach is a timeless and enchanting experience that reconnects us with the natural world and allows us to appreciate life’s simple pleasures. From the initial anticipation to the awe-inspiring moment the sun kisses the horizon, and even beyond as twilight unfolds, each step of the journey is a reminder of the world’s incredible beauty. So, whether you’re a Florida native or a visitor passing through, a sunset walk on Sapphire Beach is a must-try adventure that will undoubtedly leave you with cherished memories.
